Dental Bonding

If your smile is spoiled by the imperfections of one tooth, see what we can do at Shoreline Dentistry to give you a perfect smile.

What Is Dental Bonding?

Bonding is a technique that bonds composite resin material, which is very malleable, to the front of the tooth. It can be applied to match the color and shape of your other teeth and is a suitable technique to disguise cracked, decayed and chipped teeth, even making short teeth look longer and getting rid of small gaps in between the teeth.

What Happens During the Bonding Procedure?

Before a bonding procedure, no advance preparation is required. Using a shade guide, a resin color that closely matches your own teeth is selected. A conditioning liquid is applied to the surface of the tooth and the surface roughened slightly so that the bonding material will adhere to the surface.

The composite resin is applied to the tooth and molded. It is then smoothed and the dentist applies an ultraviolet light to harden the material, bonding it securely with your tooth. Once bonded, the tooth is polished to complete the procedure.

Does Bonding Ruin Teeth?

If you are concerned about keeping as much of the tooth's structure intact as possible, bonding is a good procedure to have, as very little of the healthy tooth structure is removed. It is also pain-free and can be done in one visit.

What Are the Benefits of Tooth Bonding?

Bonding is a reasonably quick procedure, typically taking less than 30 minutes per tooth. In terms of cosmetic dentistry procedures it does offer a quick solution but without requiring multiple visits, as is the case with veneers or crowns.

The teeth do not need any special preparation before the bonding material is applied, unlike crowns and veneers which both require that some of the tooth structure is removed for the treatment. To ensure the structure of the teeth is not interfered with, there is no need for anesthetic, so no discomfort from an injection.

Caring for Bonded Teeth

The bonding material is not as strong as natural teeth. Thus, it is crucial that you avoid chewing hard foods, including ice, biting fingernails, chewing pens, or tearing packets open with your bonded teeth. If you have habits that exert excessive force on the teeth, such as grinding your teeth or jaw clenching (bruxism), you may not be a suitable candidate for the procedure.

There are no special requirements for caring for your bonded teeth but you must adhere to a good oral hygiene routine. The dentist will recommend brushing your teeth twice daily, flossing at least once a day, and rinsing with an antiseptic mouthwash. This should be supplemented with regular dental check-ups and professional cleaning, as many times as recommended by the dentist. If you feel any sharp edges around your bonded tooth, you should make an appointment to see the dentist as you may have damaged the bonded tooth.
