When Should I Get a Dental Crown?

Dental crowns are artificial tooth restorations and fit over the teeth (hence the common term 'caps'). They can strengthen teeth and provide the appearance of a natural tooth.

Crowns are used to repair teeth that have been damaged, either by injury, tooth decay, or a large filling or root canal. They are also used to improve the appearance of a tooth that is discolored or misshapen and are used in bridges and dental implant procedures to replace teeth.

What Are Crowns Made From?

Crowns are made from a variety of different materials. The most popular is porcelain bonded to precious metal. The porcelain gives the appearance of a natural tooth but is made entirely from porcelain because it is bonded to metal. Porcelain crowns are the most natural-looking. However, the material is not as strong as bonded crowns and more suited to front teeth. All-ceramic is a metal-free alternative. It is a strong material and is suitable for all areas of the mouth. It also has a good cosmetic appearance similar to porcelain. Gold-alloy is a hard-wearing material that has been used in fillings for a long time. For many people, the material does not offer the same cosmetic result as other materials.

What is Involved in the Procedure for a Dental Crown?

The tooth must be prepared to accommodate a crown. This involves paring down the outer area of the tooth, leaving a strong inner core on which to mount the crown. Next, impressions are taken of the mouth which is sent to a laboratory where your crown is tailor-made to fit.
Dental practices that offer computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacture (CAD/CAM) can offer a same-day crown service. The design and manufacture of the crown take place in the dental office using digital technology that designs and mills the crown on-site.
The dentist makes any minor adjustments to the crown by fitting it over your tooth and adjusting as necessary. Fitting the crown is simple, using a special adhesive that is activated by light and bonds the crown securely to your tooth.

How Long Will a Dental Crown Last?

Dental crowns have a long lifespan of between 10 to 15 years, although some can last longer. It really depends on the stress placed upon it from biting and chewing and whether you have a good brushing and flossing regime. Some habits, such as crunching ice cubes, teeth grinding, or biting your fingernails can damage the crowns.

You must care for your crowns in the same way as you would your teeth. A regular twice-daily brushing and flossing regimen is essential, taking extra care to clean around the crown to prevent decay where the tooth and crown meet.
