Inlays and Onlays

Three teeth, one each with inlays, onlays, and crowns, highlighting different restorative dentistry options.Inlays and onlays are advanced dental restorations designed to repair teeth with cavities that are too large for a filling but not extensive enough to require a crown. At Shoreline Dentistry, we provide expert care in inlay and onlay treatments to help restore your smile and maintain optimal oral health.

What Are Inlays and Onlays?

Inlays and onlays are custom-made dental restorations used to repair decayed or damaged teeth. They are ideal for cases where a traditional filling would not provide enough support, yet a full crown is unnecessary. Because they require less tooth preparation than crowns, inlays and onlays help preserve more of your natural tooth structure while providing durable and long-lasting results.

What Is the Difference Between an Inlay and an Onlay?

While both inlays and onlays serve the same purpose of restoring damaged teeth, they differ in their placement and coverage. Inlays fit within the grooves of a tooth, filling cavities that are confined between the cusps (the raised points on the chewing surface of molars and premolars).

Onlays cover a larger surface area, extending over one or more cusps. They provide additional support to teeth with more extensive damage while still being a more conservative option than crowns.

What Is the Process for Getting an Inlay or Onlay?

Getting an inlay or onlay typically requires two visits to your dentist. During the first visit the dentist will prepare your tooth, removing any decay from the affected tooth and taking an impression to create a custom-fit restoration. A temporary filling will be placed to protect your tooth while your inlay or onlay is being fabricated in a dental laboratory.

During your second visit, the temporary filling will be removed, and your dentist will carefully fit the inlay or onlay to ensure a precise match.
It will then be bonded to the tooth using a strong adhesive, and cured with a special light to secure it in place.

Post-Treatment Care

After receiving an inlay or onlay, the first 48 hours are critical for long-term success. Avoid hard or sticky foods and extreme temperature changes in your diet. Stick to soft foods and resume your full oral hygiene routine as soon as possible. Keeping your mouth clean is essential for maintaining the longevity of your restoration and overall dental health.

What Materials Are Inlays and Onlays Made From?

Inlays and onlays are crafted from various materials, each offering different benefits in terms of durability and aesthetics. Common materials include:
•  Ceramic or Porcelain - Natural-looking and color-matched to your teeth, offering a seamless blend with your smile.
•  Composite Resin – Tooth-colored and more affordable, though slightly less durable than ceramic.
•  Metal or Gold – Highly durable and long-lasting, though more noticeable than tooth-colored options.

We will help you choose the best material based on your specific needs and preferences.

How Long Do Inlays and Onlays Last?

With proper care, inlays and onlays can last between 10 to 15 years, or even longer. They strengthen the tooth structure while restoring function and aesthetics. To maximize their lifespan, avoid habits like chewing on ice or using your teeth as tools, and maintain a consistent oral hygiene routine, including regular brushing, flossing, and dental check-ups.
