Sports Guard

A group of cheerful young rugby players wearing sports guard to protect their teeth celebrate their winning match.Engaging in sports is a great way to stay active and healthy, but it also comes with certain risks. To protect yourself from potential injury, especially to your teeth and mouth, the American Dental Association (ADA) strongly recommends wearing mouthguards for various activities. Sports like basketball, boxing, hockey, football, gymnastics, rugby, skateboarding, skiing, and more are all known for their high risk of oral injury.

No matter your age or level of experience, accidents can happen. Sports or activities involving physical contact, equipment, or the possibility of falling increase the risk of injury to your mouth. At Shoreline Dentistry, we can provide you with a custom-made mouthguard to ensure your teeth stay safe while you play.

Why Are Sports Mouthguards Important?

Mouthguards are essential for both adults and children who participate in physical activities. They provide protection against broken, chipped, or knocked-out teeth and shield the soft tissues inside your mouth, including your lips, tongue, and cheeks, from cuts or lacerations that could require medical attention.

While most mouthguards are designed to protect the upper teeth, those with braces or dental appliances such as bridges may require protection for their lower teeth as well.

The Process of Getting a Custom Mouthguard

Although over-the-counter mouthguards are available, they often fail to offer the same level of protection or comfort as a custom-made one. Off-the-shelf options are usually poorly fitted, which can make them uncomfortable and less effective.

At Shoreline Dentistry, we take the time to create a mouthguard that fits you perfectly. The process begins with taking an impression of your teeth. From this impression, we create a plaster cast of your teeth, which is then sent to a dental laboratory. There, a technician will craft a mouthguard tailored to your specific needs, ensuring it fits snugly and comfortably. Once the mouthguard is ready, you can come to our office to pick it up.

How Long Will a Custom Mouthguard Last?

Custom mouthguards offer long-lasting protection. Store-bought mouthguards are often made from inferior materials that wear out quickly, leading to discomfort and decreased effectiveness. Most professional athletes replace their mouthguards once or twice a season, but for the average person, a custom mouthguard can last for several years. Children, however, may need to replace theirs more frequently as their mouths grow and change.

Caring for Your Sports Mouthguard

Proper care is key to extending the lifespan of your mouthguard. After each use, rinse it under cool, running water and store it in its protective case to avoid bacteria buildup. Avoid cleaning it with toothpaste, as it can scratch the surface. Instead, you can soak it in an antimicrobial solution or wash it with soap and water.
